ALM - Oftalmolaser
Once the Presbyopia project has been completed, we can verify how complex this subject is in fact. Full of proposals and solutions, but also leaving some doubts, which constitute the true sign that not everything is understood at present, in trying to find a single generalized and recommended clinical decision, for Presbyopia.
However, it can be affirmed that there has been a great deal of technical progress in offering paths that diminish the deficient near and intermediate vision.
And in this respect, we cannot fail to praise a work that we can call superb in theoretical and practical terms, providing a solid lever designed to cement more knowledge and to turn Presbyopia into a settled clinical subject in the future.
The work, it may be said, is not finished. Rather, it is initiated with the possible variables of future development, filled with the ingredients that form the basis for the "formula" that is desired for Presbyopia.
The index of the work summarizes the current alternatives, which allow us to solve the condition of the altered near vision. This means that Presbyopia was "dissected" in its different aspects: etiology, pathogenesis, and therapeutics, including the different clinical solutions as well as the analyzed expected functional prognosis.
Which is the best option for "this" Patient with presbyopia, is the question that is put before the Physician. Given the diversity of current options, it turns out that today, multiple solutions are possible, but the best for each clinical case is the purpose of the decision on which this book instructs and elucidates.
It will not be an easy choice to be assumed by the Physician and accepted by the Patient. Yet the arguments "explained" by the Physician to the Patient, constitute the crucial step of the conscious decision made by the presbyopic patient, since each case must be understood as specific and individual, as demonstrated in clinical practice.
Thus, the success of this work is centered and summarized in the different approaches to presbyopia and in the hypotheses of choice for each case, according to the professional and the personal requirements of the Patient.
On the other hand, and given the enormous space it fills in the book, it is unquestionable that Presbyopia Refractive Surgery currently constitutes a success, since it has become the desired preference, more and more frequent, as the choice and demand of the Patient.
In fact, it will constitute, I am convinced, the right path for Presbyopia.
In summary, the present work is, so to speak, the "primer" for a good clinical procedure presenting the multiple answers for the practice of quality Ophthalmology.
In this sense, the Portuguese Society of Ophthalmology and the Coordinators of this exhaustive project are to be congratulated, recognizing that each article and each author or authors, deserve a word of applause for the addition they have given to science in a truly complex matter such as Presbyopia.
I end up sensitized by the opportunity they gave me to write this epilogue and I congratulate the high scientific level of the team of authors of the Monograph - Presbyopia.
